What Do You Think? Is It Possible to Live in Harmony?

I remember several years ago at a group discussion one of the questions I asked was, “Do you think it’s possible for humanity to live in harmony?” I was surprised to hear how fast and loud their response was – a resounding NO! We talked about it more and it looked grim based on what humans do to each other, animals, wildlife and the environment. Is there no hope?

After awhile, they all turned to me and asked me what I thought and I must admit I didn’t have an answer for them at first, still recovering from their response. But as I thought about it I asked them, “What seems to be the one thing all humans desire?” They write about it, sing about it – dream, play, and talk about it – it’s LOVE. So, it seems logical to me that, if we all have a deep, inner desire to love and be loved, harmony is possible.

Why is it then that we can’t live in harmony if we desire love so much? Maybe it’s because we’ve forgotten – maybe what we have come to believe love to be really isn’t love. Maybe, it’s just our ego acting out disguising to be love. If we can’t realize our connection to everyone (no exceptions) then our idea of love has been misplaced and misguided.

Eckhart Tolle in his book, A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose (Oprah’s Book Club, Selection 61)(Paperback), says:

“The atoms that make up your body were once forged inside stars, and the causes of even the smallest event are virtually infinite and connected with the whole in incomprehensible ways.”

Love isn’t: “If you do something for me, I’ll love you” – or – Love isn’t: “Behave and believe like I do or I’ll love you”. Love is allowing others to follow their path and process their life as they need to in order to learn and grow and through it all seeing that part of them that never lost its shimmer or gloss forever connected. We look at the package and love one another based on the package but it’s what it contains that is complete and whole. The love God imparted within His creation is never lost.

So, what do you think – “Do you think it is possible for humanity to live in harmony?” Don’t look at the circumstances in the world or even what’s going on in your community or home. Look at what God looks at and see what He sees and then answer. As John Donne so eloquently wrote:

“No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main; if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friends or thine own were; any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.”

  1. I do believe harmony is possible. And all it takes is one person – you – to become harmonious.

I love Eckart Tolle philosophy when he talks about the two people we all have living in our head. In “The Power Of Now” which I’m currently reading, it’s an absolutely explosive discovery when you suddenly realise you are living with someone else.

That inner voice that keeps “thinking” can be quietened so you can re-awaken and truly experience the world around you and the present moment.

The feeling of serenity you experience is visible for others to see. And therefore infectious.

So the best way to achieve harmony is be it yourself first. You never know, we may spread the first worthy virus and “disease” that everyone really and truly wants to catch.

  2. Do I think it’s possible? Yes, absolutely.

Do I think it’s likely? Not in this generation, no. There’s a whole lot of enlightenment that needs to be happening for humanity to live in peace.

  3. Seriously, I’m going to have to pick up both of those books. I’m loving what I am seeing

Now to your question – is it possible to live in harmony? Idealistically speaking, I feel if this type of conscious living was a universal thought process, sure, we could live in harmony. But I think we are where we are because even with ourselves, so many of us havent achieved personal balance yet.. and so it makes sense that collectively – its a big ego bashing mess 🙂

There is a lot of pain and disharmony in the world but word is 🙂 kindness and love is contagious. This is why I’ve made the personal decision to contribute to the positive energies out there as much as I can through my work, my action, my thoughts, my love.

It may not be world peace but it sure is something!

  4. JEMi – thank you for your comment. It’s interesting when you talk about harmony because most of us view and base our feelings and beliefs about it from the ego perspective. If we could step away from the influences of the ego, we’d be able to understand it with no problem.

I’m glad you’re doing your part to contribute to the positive energies. You’re contributing to the awakening.

See you round the kitchen table – hot chocolate is heating up.

    Blessings

  5. Maritzia – thank you for stopping by and leaving your comment. I can see what you’re saying about harmony – there’s a lot that still has to be accomplished before we see it.

That would be true if we were doing the work of enlightenment and harmony ourselves. All we’re doing within our own lives is aligning with this energy individually and allowing it to happen. As we learn to focus on the life and energy that is within us instead of our ego we’re are allowing and becoming aligned. Then watch out.

All things are possible when you’re in harmony with that force of the Creator.

I’m happy you stopped by for a visit – hope you’ll come back again and share more of your thoughts. Maybe join us around the kitchen table.

    Blessings

  6. Ian – you’re back. Thank you for your comment. I’m happy you’re here sharing your thoughts with us.

The voice that keeps talking in our head is not who we are but we don’t know it. These are more of these things Eckhart Tolle talks about in his newest book “A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose”.

More and more people are awakening all over the world and when it catches on I believe there will be a transformation – a new Earth – and harmony.

Your’re right it has to start with us. Humanity needs it and it’s ready.

Hope you’ll come back again. I enjoy hearing what you’re reading and discussing what you’re learning.

I would love to think the world could live in harmony, but truthfully I don’t think it’s possible. It has never happened so far in the history of the world and that is for a reason.

The devil is in all of us, so to speak. I say this not religiously, but just to illustrate that human beings have a tendency to be destructive and ego driven and fearful. If anything, fear is the big motivator behind so much hateful behaviour.

I think part of our soul’s journey here on earth is to find a way to love each other and ourselves, to trust in us,not in some out there all knowing God.

When we can reach for each other and open our hearts and minds to each other there will be harmony, but I can’t see that happening in my lifetime, if ever.

I don’t think this has to be a depressing thing though. We have to focus on what we can do in our own backyard. Strive to be ethical, kind and at peace. That’s the best thing you can do for yourself and the planet, I think.

  8. Kelly – I hear what you’re saying. I felt the same response from those in that discussion group. It was the time around the Oklahoma City bombings and Timothy McVeigh was just captured. We all couldn’t make any sense of it.

But I think what the changes in time are showing us is that harmony starts, like you say, on an individual level. When we’re able to feel that and change that in our own lives it impacts the world.

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts. I appreciate you.

    Blessings,

I would love to hear from you. . .thank you for stopping by.
