Dreams – We All Have Them

(Photo by Microsoft Office Clipart) ~~ We all have them but where do they come from and where do we go when we’re dreaming? Do we leave our bodies and travel to places and dimensions only our spirits know of?

Where ever we are when we’re dreaming it seems so real – it’s like a fantasy. I think it was Rumi that wrote something like …. When he slept he dreamt he was a man dreaming he was a butterfly and when he awoke he didn’t know if he was a man dreaming he was a butterfly or a butterfly dreaming he was a man. What do you think? Have you had those dreams when you awoke it felt like you were still dreaming? It took you awhile to get grounded or back to Earth, so to speak.

Dreams sometimes give you a message. A long time ago in the late ‘70’s I had a vivid dream. I saw a distant newspaper spinning and coming towards me and when it got close it stopped spinning with bold headlines PLANE CRASH – NO SURVIVORS – AFL FOOTBALL TEAM. I sat straight up in bed and in my mind’s eye I could still see the headlines. When I closed my eyes I could still see them. I knew this team and it is a favorite one of mine. I was shaken. My husband woke up and I told him of the dream and we talked and he settled me down enough to get back to sleep but the next morning I couldn’t shake the urgency of the dream.

All I knew to do was pray….and pray more until there was peace. I knew the team would be leaving that week to prepare for a game that weekend and prayed and enlisted prayer chains to also pray. No plane crash ever happened, thank God, and I don’t know what it was about from this side of heaven. Maybe I’ll find out some day.

In his book, Wisdom Of The Ages, Dr. Wayne Dyer quotes from an intellectual spokesman for the English Romantic movement, Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834):

“What if you slept?
And what if,
In your sleep
You dreamed?
And what if,
In your dream,
You went to heaven
And there plucked
A strange and
Beautiful flower?
And what if,
When you awoke,
You had the flower
In your hand?”

Who is to say what is reality? Maybe what we believe to be reality is really only an illusion – a dream.

Something to think about – and dream about – sweet dreams.

  1. Hi Pat,

Great thought provoking post. Recently Hunter did a post about lucid dreaming. I had actually read about it first on Steve Pavlina’s blog. It’s an interesting concept, but one I haven’t cared to try.

The plane crash dream must have really scared you. I bet you often wonder what would have happened if you hadn’t prayed.

I like the poem you included.

  2. Yes, we all have dream and I have been reading many books and articles on dream and tried to compare or relate them with the dream I see and also discuss with others about the dream they have seen but till now I haven’t found any valid reason on why do we see dream in any of them. Some reason applies in one dream doesn’t get applied in another case.
We be in different world in dream but that all disappear after we woke up. This I also think is kind of illusion.
I haven’t experienced as happened for Rumi, taking sometime to realize that I am in earth. This mean I say I haven’t been to Heaven so far!
Thanks for writing about dream. I always like to see what other have written or like to learn more about dream.

  3. Jirel – thank you for stopping by and for your comment.

I can relate to what you’re saying about dreams – it appears to be an illusion but is it really? There’s much we still have to learn about the deeper parts of our mind and how it’s connected to the soul.

There are some that are gifted with dream interpretation. Some of them say what we dream has a lot to do with symbolism.

Enjoyed your feedback and sharing. Hope you stop back again real soon.

  4. Barbara – thank you for your comment. I love it when you stop by.

You’re right about dreams being an interesting concept and one you could go into much depth on….books and books have been written.

It’s been over 30 years now since that dream I had and I can still remember it vividly and see the headlines and smoking plane in my mind’s eye. I don’t know what that was all about but it was sure something I couldn’t shake.

The prayers are what lifted the urgency and released whatever it was about and brought peace. Whew!! Maybe I’ll find out someday.

I’m trying to get over to your blog too. Thanks for stopping by. Hope to chat again real soon.

  5. Hi Pat,

Our essence does go and travel when we sleep … truly, a great part of us leaves our physical body in our astral time.

We travel into (hopefully) positive astral planes to process the events of our lives, to learn from our Guides and master teachers in Spirit. We also travel back to Divine Source for 3 minutes every night to restore ourselves. This is necessary to our survival – sleep deprivation can be severely damaging because it prevents us from connecting with our Source.

On occasion, we travel to negative astral planes and have nightmares. We can even get trapped there, resulting in recurring nightmares or night terrors.

Dreams are tricky to interpret, though. Sometimes they are simply created by our subconscious. Sometimes we are processing memories and impressions from collective consciousness. And sometimes they are indeed messages from the spiritual realm.

    Blessings,
    Andrea

  6. Andrea – thank you so much for your comment and for sharing your expertise on the spiritual aspect of dreams and what is happening.

I agree with you. I do believe there is a part of us that leaves our bodies and travels to other dimensions. That’s why when you are abruptly awakened we feel disoriented and out of place.

In some of my dreams I’ve felt as if I’ve revisited with loved ones that have passed over. It was like I was in their world and it is as real as this world. It’s another dimension.

I love your feedback and sharing of the wisdom of what you know best.

I would love to hear from you. . .thank you for stopping by.
